Hi there,

welcome to the first newsletter from LekkerSpots! If you're new here, LekkerSpots is basically my personal travel diary, made public. It's where I share all the hidden gems I find while exploring.
For this first newsletter, I want to tell you about my recent trip to Kunje, from October 16th to the 27th.

😴 Why I Had to Escape

After so many months of hard work and listening to non-stop construction noise in my Cape Town neighbourhood, I desperately needed to leave town for more than just a weekend.
I decided to head back to one of my all-time favourite spots: Kunje. It's a place where you can book an entire holiday home, complete with a pool, right on a working fruit farm.

🚜 The Sound of Silence

The best part about being on the farm is the quiet. The absolute loudest thing you’ll hear is the occasional tractor driving past , and the farm workers always give you a friendly greeting.
You wake up to the smell of flowers blossoming and the sound of bees humming in the background. There is absolutely no annoying car traffic, no hooting, none of that Cape Town city crap. It’s the perfect place to just clear your head.

πŸ₯Ύ Running, Hiking, and Stargazing

Front of House

The house itself is great, with 3 bedrooms, a big braai area, and its own dedicated pool.
I spent most of my days just going for long walks on the farm or trail running. As someone who usually runs on the promenade (which hurts my knees) , trail running here was so much more fun. The holiday home is right next to the mountain and close to hiking trails, so I'd just go exploring.

Hiking Trails

After sunset, I’d chill at the pool and do some stargazing.

πŸ•·οΈ A Quick Word of Warning... I Wasn't Alone

This is a real farm, so you have to be aware of your surroundings!
I was not alone...

  • I found a massive spider lurking around, which I had to chase away with a broomstick.

  • I encountered a scorpion in my bedroom, which I managed to trap and free back outside.

  • I also heard that someone at a nearby cottage found a yellow cobra 🐍.

It’s just a reminder to wear proper closed shoes when hiking or going for a long walk, and maybe check under the bed.

πŸ“΅ The Digital Detox (With a Hotspot Hack)

What makes this place a true getaway is that it does not offer Wi-Fi. Honestly, that's the best part. It forces you to properly digital detox, light a braai, jump in the pool, and just switch off.
But, if you do need to work or stream some music, the LTE connection is fantastic. I used my iPhone as a hotspot and was getting speeds around 100mbps, which was more than fast enough.

🍯 My Final Thoughts

This place is so underrated. You can even buy high quality dried fruit or honey directly from the farm. It’s a truly lekker spot, whether you're a solo traveller like me or in a big group.
I’ve added the full details and map location for Kunje over on the website.

Thanks for reading, and happy exploring.
